President Claudia Sheinbaum has warmly welcomed the recent reduction of tariffs on Mexican vehicles exported to the United States and Canada under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). This development signals a vital victory for Mexico’s sovereignty and economic integration within North America, reinforcing the country’s role in the regional automotive value chain and its resistance to protectionist U.S. measures.

The tariff on Mexican-made vehicles, initially set at 25% by the current U.S. administration under President Donald Trump, has been reduced to an average of 15%, representing nearly a 40% cut in duties.

This reduction is not merely a technical adjustment but a recognition of Mexico’s adherence to fair trade practices and the value of its manufacturing capabilities. It safeguards thousands of jobs in Mexico’s auto industry, which is a cornerstone of the national economy and a source of dignity for Mexican workers.

This tariff reduction is part of a broader effort to deepen trade integration between Mexico, the United States, and Canada, countering the unilateral and protectionist policies that the current U.S. government has imposed.

The Mexican government’s persistent diplomatic engagement, led by Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, has been instrumental in securing this preferential treatment, demonstrating the power of negotiation grounded in mutual respect and solidarity among North American nations.

President Sheinbaum has also expressed her government’s determination to secure preferential agreements for Mexican steel and aluminum exports, sectors vital to national development and workers’ welfare. These efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy to defend Mexico’s productive sectors from unjust tariffs and to promote fair trade conditions that benefit working people rather than corporate monopolies.

The Mexican government maintains close dialogue with automotive industry leaders, who have affirmed their confidence in Mexico’s manufacturing capabilities and have no plans to relocate production elsewhere.

This confidence is further supported by increased foreign direct investment, signaling that Mexico’s economic model, rooted in regional integration and social justice, continues to attract sustainable development opportunities.

This tariff reduction is a milestone in Mexico’s ongoing struggle for economic justice and regional solidarity, demonstrating that progressive governance and principled diplomacy can overcome protectionist pressures and build a more equitable North American future.
